Roman Catholicism was first introduced to India by Portuguese, Italian and Irish Jesuits in the 16th century to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ among Indians.
On 24 December 1774 he was exiled again to Mount Athos and later to Heybeliada, where he died on 10 May 1775.
In recent years, the number of Griko who speak the Griko language has been greatly reduced; the younger Griko have rapidly shifted to Italian.
