Resistance to equal rights to women have come from much the same groups who resist equal rights for homosexuals.
Ancient Greece and Rome—with their higher status and lower status males—had no problem with same-sex relations provided they did not upset existing status relations.
But the notion that sex is properly between equals or near-equals is very far from a universal human norm.
